The 30 full and 13 short papers presented together with 3 keynotes were carefully reviewed and selected from 151 submissions. XML has been developed as a standard data format for information storage and exchange. In most XML database systems, queries are processed by searching the hierarchy of each underlying XML document. Similar to relational databases, most XML documents are actually designed based on the relationship among such semantic concepts as object, attribute and value. Moreover, queries are also issued with concerns of these concepts, e.g., to find the attribute values of a certain object or to find the relationship between two objects. This book presents a new approach to process XML queries. We take semantics as a central concern during XML query processing. We design semantics-based algorithms to perform pattern matching, which is the core operation for XML query processing, as well as grouping and aggregation for analytical queries. We theoretically and experimentally show the advantage of our semantic approach over other existing approaches, in terms of query processing performance. This result should be useful for future research and applications in XML data management.

China is the third largest nation with the largest population in the world. Shanghai, the largest city in China and a great metropolis, famous in Asia and throughout the world, is therefore a most appropriate location to host this conference. The objective of the workshops associated with ER 2004 was to give p- ticipants the opportunity to present and discuss emerging hot topics related to conceptual modeling, thereby adding new perspectives to conceptual mod- ing. Some of these workshopswere brand new while others had been held in conjunction with ER conferences as many as ?ve times. Following the philosophy of the ER workshops, the selection of contributions was very carefully carried out in order to keep the excellent standard; 13, 6, 16, 8, 7, and 6 papers were accepted by the six workshops, respectively, with acceptance rates 34%, 37%, 27%, 38%, 41%, and 46%, respective

The 22nd International Conference on Conceptual Modeling (ER 2003) returned to Chicago after an absence of 18 years. Chicago, a city well known for its trendsetting and daring architecture, has met the new century with a renewed commitment to open public spaces and human interaction. Thus it provided a ?tting venue for ER 2003, the scope of which was expanded to encompass all aspects of conceptual modeling in order to deal with constantly changing information technology and business practices and to accommodate a new openness in connecting systems to each other and to human users. The ER 2003 Program Co-chairs, Il-Yeol Song, Stephen Liddle, and Tok Wang Ling, along with an outstanding Program Committee assembled one of the ?nest technical programs of this conference series. In keeping with the tradition of previous ER conferences, the program for ER 2003 also included four preconference workshops, two preconference tutorials, two conference tutorials, two panels, and a demos and poster session.
